Beginning of May, Dell, Microsoft and Vmware announced a partnership at Dell Technologies World to create a joint edge computing platform for the Internet of Things (IoT).
Microsoft is partnering with its Azure IoT Edge application, VMware will be used for its Pulse IoT Center to monitor and manage devices – and Dell is providing the necessary hardware with its dual-core Intel Atom Edge Gateways.
“First, Pulse will help implement the Microsoft Azure IoT Edge into the required edge systems so that it can collect, analyze and respond to data in real time,” – said the companies in a joint statement during the presentation of the concept at Dell Technologies World 2018.
“While this common solution is optimized for Dell Edge Gateways, it can continuously manage, monitor and better secure the certified combination of gateways/edge systems with the latest patches and updates and monitor the status of these connected devices.”
Such a system of components and know-how from three different manufacturers should offer the advantage, among other things, of being able to process and use the collected logs, sensor data and other information within the closed network – without having to send the data first into the cloud of a third party provider. In addition, the costs incurred are easier to calculate – and the purely internal use also makes data protection easier.
“It’s kind of interesting to see this boom in edge computing, which I think has really just started,” – said Michael Dell (Chairman/CEO Dell) at Dell Technologies World.
“We’ve had plenty of customers and then they go and do that and go: ‘Oh wow, the amount of data, the ingress and egress charges, the speed at which they operate, and by the way, cost too. -Also customers are figuring out this data is more valuable, and do we really want to send it all off to somebody else, and then rent it back?”
However, it should be noted that VMware and Microsoft use cloud resources for their software.
The still nameless cooperation project should be available to end customers from the 3rd quarter of this year.
