Homey introduces Matter Bridge App to extend smart home interoperability
Dutch smart home specialist Athom B.V. has released the Matter Bridge app for its “Homey” Smart Home Hub, enabling its devices to expose non-Matter devices as native components in the Matter ecosystem. The app is now available via the Homey App Store.
Homey is a multi-protocol smart-home hub designed to unify devices across otherwise incompatible ecosystems. It stands out by supporting a wide range of wireless standards—such as Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, Infrared and 433 MHz—within a single platform. This broad compatibility allows users to combine new and legacy products, automate them through one interface, and integrate them with major voice assistants without being locked into a single vendor’s ecosystem.
The Matter Bridge app supports the Homey Pro (Early 2023) and Homey Pro mini models. It allows users to step under one roof devices originally built on technologies such as infrared, Z-Wave, Zigbee and 433 MHz — and make them visible and controllable through Matter-compatible platforms like Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings or Home Assistant.
Key features and setup
Users install the Matter Bridge app, navigate to Settings → Matter Bridge in the Homey mobile or web-app, scan a QR code from their Matter controller and select which Homey-connected devices to expose into the Matter network. The device categories listed as supported include lights (on/off, dimmable, colour), plug-in sockets, thermostats, locks, blinds/curtains/roller-shutters, door/window sensors, temperature/humidity sensors, motion/occupancy sensors, air-quality sensors and CO₂ or smoke alarms.
This launch addresses a major friction point in consumer smart homes: many older or proprietary devices lack native Matter support and would otherwise require replacement or remain siloed. With the Bridge app, Homey users can continue using their existing devices while accessing newer ecosystems via Matter.
While the app extends support for many device types, bridging into Matter may still face limitations depending on the original device’s protocol or vendor implementation. For example, within the Homey user community there are reports of minor stability issues in auto-discovery when the app is used with certain platforms.
Availability
The Matter Bridge app is available now in the Homey App Store. No separate hardware purchase is required if the user already uses a compatible Homey Pro or Homey Pro mini. For users with existing smart-home deployments that include legacy or less common protocols, this update offers a meaningful upgrade path without full replacement of hardware. From a market-perspective, it strengthens Homey’s position as a universal hub bridging multiple standards, rather than forcing users into a single vendor ecosystem.
Summary:
- Homey launches Matter Bridge app to expose non-Matter devices to Matter networks.
- Works with Homey Pro (Early 2023) and Homey Pro mini.
- Supports multiple radio technologies: infrared, Z-Wave, Zigbee, 433 MHz.
- Devices become visible in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant.
- Setup via QR code, selection of devices in the app.
- Adds value by preserving legacy hardware within modern smart-home ecosystems.
