Murata launches iSIM IoT module with integrated 1NCE connectivity

Murata, the Japanese manufacturer of electronic components and communication modules, simplifies global IoT deployments with the “Type 1SC” module – featuring pre-installed connectivity from 1NCE and iSIM technology.
Murata has introduced the “Type 1SC,” a new LPWA module that combines iSIM functionality (integrated SIM) with pre-installed global connectivity from 1NCE for the first time. The solution is aimed primarily at low-data, low-power applications such as asset tracking, fleet management, and telemedicine.
The “Type 1SC” module supports both LTE-M and NB-IoT and is network-compatible in 173 countries. By deeply integrating cloud-based 1NCE connectivity directly into the module, traditional SIM provisioning is no longer required. Manufacturers and developers benefit from simplified device development, lower integration costs, and faster time to market.
Technology Comparison: eSIM vs. iSIM
While eSIMs (embedded SIMs) are permanently embedded in the device but added as separate chips, iSIMs (integrated SIMs) go a step further by being directly integrated into the main processor or communication chip. This not only reduces the required space on the circuit board, but also lowers power consumption—an important factor for battery-powered IoT devices. Additionally, hardware-level integration enhances overall security.
Murata is not exclusively tied to a single provider with its Type 1SC module. The module is also used by IoT service provider Soracom, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) specializing in globally connected IoT applications. Murata’s product page for the module also lists additional MVNO partners such as Vodafone and monogoto, highlighting the module’s flexibility across various technical ecosystems.
Pricing and Availability
The Murata Type 1SC module and corresponding evaluation kits are now available from distributor Embedded Works, starting at approximately USD 21. The solution includes an initial data volume of 50 MB, with optional top-ups available. An evaluation kit for developers is also available for around USD 186.
